Have you ever thought about becoming an entrepreneur? Or maybe you already are one and do not even know it.
According to a recent report from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, nearly half of Americans say they would like to start their own business someday and nearly one-quarter say they already are self-employed.
So, what exactly is entrepreneurship? And what are the different types of entrepreneurship?
The definition of entrepreneurship according to the Kauffman Foundation is "the activity of designing, launching, and running a new business or enterprise."
But there are different types of entrepreneurship, which I will share with you in this blog post.
It is important to note that there is no one-size-fits-all definition of entrepreneurship and that each type of entrepreneurship has its own set of characteristics. And the good news is that there are lots of different ways to be an entrepreneur. You do not have to start the next Facebook or Google to be successful.
So, if you are thinking about becoming an entrepreneur or are already running your own business, here are 5 different types of entrepreneurship to keep in mind:
1. Social Entrepreneurship
Social entrepreneurs are those who start businesses to make a positive social impact. They often tackle issues like poverty, education, and healthcare. And they typically use business strategies to achieve their goals.
One of the most famous social entrepreneurs is Muhammad Yunus, who founded the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. The bank provides small loans to impoverished women, helping them to start their businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.
2. Sustainable Entrepreneurship
Sustainable entrepreneurship is all about creating businesses that are environmentally friendly and have a positive social impact. It is about finding ways to do more with less and making products and services that are sustainable in the long term.
One of the most well-known sustainable entrepreneurs is Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla Motors. He has revolutionized the electric car industry and is working to make sustainable energy more affordable for everyone. And another example of a sustainable entrepreneur is Shai Agassi, the founder of Better Place. Better Place is a company that provides electric car infrastructure, making it easier for people to switch to electric vehicles.
3. Technology Entrepreneurship
Technology entrepreneurs are those who start businesses that focus on developing new technologies. It is a broad category that includes everything from software development to biotechnology. And it is one of the most rapidly growing areas of entrepreneurship.
One of the most famous technology entrepreneurs is Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft. He started Microsoft in 1975 and it has since become the largest software company in the world. And another example of a technology entrepreneur is Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google. He started Google in 1998 and it has since become the largest search engine in the world.
4. Green Entrepreneurship
Green entrepreneurship is all about starting environmentally friendly businesses. It is about finding ways to do more with less and making products and services that are sustainable in the long term. And it is one of the fastest-growing areas of entrepreneurship.
Some well-known green entrepreneurs include John D. Peters, the founder of IceStone, a sustainable countertop company. He started IceStone in 2003 and it has since become one of the leading manufacturers of sustainable countertops. And another example of a green entrepreneur is Marcin Jakubowski, the founder of Open Source Ecology, a nonprofit that is developing open-source plans for the 50 most important machines that we need to sustain modern civilization.
5. Social Media Entrepreneurship
Social media entrepreneurs are those who start businesses that focus on social media. It is a relatively new area of entrepreneurship and it is growing rapidly.
One of the most famous social media entrepreneurs is Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook. He started Facebook in 2004 and it has since become the largest social networking site in the world. And another example of a social media entrepreneur is Evan Williams, the co-founder of Twitter. He started Twitter in 2006 and it has since become one of the most popular social networking sites in the world.
These are just a few of the many types of entrepreneurship. As you can see, there is no one-size-fits-all definition of what it means to be an entrepreneur. And that is a good thing!
